The Upper Mustang Trek is all about exploring the hidden world of the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Mustang and it is a rare privilege. The region is also known as the ‘Last Forbidden Kingdom” which is the most interesting places in Nepal to explore the Tibetan Buddhist culture, different types of beautiful monasteries, amazing muddy landscapes with so many natural caves, traditional villages, as well as the stunning architecture on view at the walled city of Lo Manthang ( capital of Mustang region). The history of Lo is shrouded in legend, myth, and mystery, but there are some records of the events in Lo as the 8th century it is quite likely that the Tibetan poet Milarepa who lived from 1040 to 1123 visited Lo. Mustang itself similar to the Tibetan plateau with its endless expanses of yellow and grey rolling hills eroded by wind. Mustang has long been protected from a mass of tourism and is now known as the last bastion of traditional lovely Tibetan culture.
Here you will experience a way of life of true mountain people who for hundreds of years had very little contact with the rest of Nepal and retained their rich cultural heritage. Until recent times their king was officially recognized by the Nepal Government. Mustang was until 1950 a separate kingdom within the boundaries of Nepal. Still, we can see the house of Mustang King in the ancient capital knows as Lo-Manthang. Upper Mustang trek was opened to non-Nepali travelers only from 15 years ago and even now access is still highly restricted to enter upper mustang. For this Upper Mustang Trek, trekkers need a special trekking permit and must be accompanied by a government-appointed official. In this region, travelers can do trekking even during monsoon season due to being in the Himalayan rain shadow. The Upper Mustang trek is not that much heard and the highest point is 3800m where will be but for some trekkers, it could be difficult due to cold in winter and always windy and dusty through the year so we will see fewer travelers in winter.
