5 Days Marangu Route - 5 Days

Tanzania - Hiking Tours

Tour Itinerary
The Marangu Route is the most popular trekking path on Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its relatively straightforward itinerary and comfortable hut accommodations. Often referred to as the "Coca-Cola Route," it offers a gradual ascent, allowing trekkers to acclimatize effectively while enjoying the stunning biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes. The route is unique as it provides overnight stays in cozy huts rather than camping, making it a great option for those seeking a less rugged experience.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
• Elevation: Start at 1,800 m (5,906 ft) and ascend to 2,700 m (8,850 ft)
• Walking Time: Approximately 4-5 hours
• Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
• Terrain: Lush rainforest
Overview: Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where you’ll register and meet your guide and porters. The trail starts through a beautiful rainforest, characterized by towering trees, vibrant green foliage, and diverse wildlife. Look out for the black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the trees and various bird species chirping around you.
As you hike, the sound of birds and the rustle of leaves will accompany you. The path is well-maintained but can be muddy, so sturdy trekking boots are essential. Upon reaching Mandara Hut, you can settle into your accommodation, which typically consists of wooden A-frame huts with bunk beds. After dinner, enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings and prepare for the next day’s hike.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
• Elevation: Ascend from 2,700 m (8,850 ft) to 3,720 m (12,200 ft)
• Walking Time: About 5-6 hours
• Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles)
• Terrain: Moorland with stunning views
Overview: After breakfast, you’ll set off toward Horombo Hut. The trail transitions from the rainforest to the moorland zone, where the landscape opens up to reveal expansive vistas of both Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. This section offers incredible photo opportunities, so keep your camera ready!
The vegetation changes here; you’ll see giant lobelias and the iconic senecio plants, which look almost prehistoric. Along the way, make sure to stay hydrated and take breaks to enjoy the view. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, you’ll find a more communal atmosphere, as this is a popular stop for trekkers. Spend the evening relaxing, acclimatizing, and socializing with fellow hikers.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
• Elevation: Climb from 3,720 m (12,200 ft) to 4,703 m (15,430 ft)
• Walking Time: Approximately 6-7 hours
• Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
• Terrain: Alpine desert
Overview: Today’s trek to Kibo Hut is critical for acclimatization. The path ascends steadily, and the air begins to feel thinner as you gain elevation. The landscape becomes more desolate, resembling a high desert. It’s essential to take your time and maintain a steady pace; listen to your body, as altitude sickness can occur.
Upon reaching Kibo Hut, located just below the summit, you’ll have a chance to rest and prepare for the final ascent. The huts here are more basic, but the atmosphere is focused on the upcoming summit push. Eat a hearty dinner and aim for an early night’s sleep, as you’ll be starting your summit attempt around midnight.
Day 4: Summit Day - Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and descent to Horombo Hut
• Elevation: Ascend from 4,703 m (15,430 ft) to 5,895 m (19,341 ft) and then descend back to 3,720 m (12,200 ft)
• Walking Time: 12-15 hours round trip
• Distance: Approximately 22 km (13.7 miles) round trip
• Terrain: Scree and rocky path
Overview: Your summit day begins in the dark, around midnight. After a quick snack, you’ll start your climb to Uhuru Peak. The first part of the ascent is steep and challenging, navigating through loose rock and scree. The cold air and high altitude may make this trek particularly strenuous, but the thrill of reaching the summit drives you forward.
As you climb, take time to appreciate the stars above; the views of the night sky can be breathtaking. After several hours of hiking, you’ll reach Stella Point, where many climbers take a short break to catch their breath and enjoy the stunning sunrise over the African plains. From Stella Point, the final push to Uhuru Peak is about an hour along a rocky path, but the excitement of reaching the highest point in Africa is worth every effort.
At Uhuru Peak, take time to savor the achievement, take photos, and soak in the magnificent panoramic views. Afterward, begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut. This long day will test your stamina, but with determination and the support of your guides and fellow trekkers, you’ll make it!

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
• Elevation: Descend from 3,720 m (12,200 ft) to 1,800 m (5,906 ft)
• Walking Time: Approximately 5-6 hours
• Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)
• Terrain: Rainforest
Overview: The final day is a descent back to Marangu Gate. After breakfast, you’ll retrace your steps through the lush rainforest. The journey down allows you to enjoy the scenery that you may have missed on the way up. The sounds of the forest, the smell of the earth, and the sight of the vibrant vegetation will provide a satisfying conclusion to your trek.
As you approach Marangu Gate, you’ll feel a mix of emotions—accomplishment, exhaustion, and perhaps a little sadness that your adventure is coming to an end. Upon reaching the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate, a proud reminder of your achievement. Many climbers enjoy celebrating with a meal or drinks in the nearby village, reflecting on the incredible journey they’ve just completed.
Additional Considerations and Tips:
• Acclimatization: Pay attention to any symptoms of altitude sickness (headaches, nausea, dizziness). If you feel unwell, inform your guide immediately. It's essential to ascend slowly to allow your body to adjust.
• Preparation: Training beforehand is vital. Consider hiking regularly, focusing on endurance and stamina-building activities.
• Gear: Pack layers to manage varying temperatures, including thermal layers, waterproof jackets, gloves, hats, and good-quality trekking boots. A sturdy daypack for daily essentials is also helpful.
• Hydration and Nutrition: Drink plenty of water (at least 3-4 liters per day) and eat a balanced diet during the trek to maintain energy levels.
• Guided Experience: Always trek with a certified guide and support team for safety and to ensure you have a rewarding experience.
This detailed itinerary not only covers the essentials but also emphasizes the beauty and challenges of climbing Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route. Enjoy your adventure, and may you reach the summit with great memories!
