Herceg Novi – Blue Cave – Mamula
Famous writer Ivo Andrić told this city: “This city of eternal greenery, sun and stairs stays stuck between the sea and the hill as a place whose magic can be experienced more and more as a place with the soul.“
Herceg Novi is a coastal city in Montenegro, located between the high mountain Orjen and the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. Many consider this city the most beautiful in the Adriatic due to architecture, due to the warm sea and pleasant climate.
Herceg Novi abounds in natural beauty – flowers, palm trees, cactus, magnolia, eucaliptys and many other species, some of which are so rare that it is a frequent visit of biologists to the city. Because of that, Herceg Novi is called ‘’a city of flowers’’. This city with its ‘’Pet Danica’’ promenade, Forte Mare fortress, fortress Kanli Kula, beautiful churches, countless stone stairs and narrow streets, a series of restaurants and cafes, blue sea, ships sunbathing, sound of waves and the smell of sea salt will complement your holiday.
The Blue Cave is the most interesting and beautiful natural attraction of this kind in the whole Mediterranean. Its name is given by a specific blue color that occurs during the sunny summer days when the sun rays are reflected from the surface of the sea and reflected in the interior of the cave through a smaller opening. Swimming in the azure blue sea of the Blue Cave is a truly unforgettable experience to which real sea and nature phenomena lovers always come back again.
Mamula is located in the Herceg Novi part of the bay, between the peninsula Luštica and Prevlaka, about 3.4 nautical miles from Herceg Novi. The largest part of the island is occupied by a fortress built in the 19th century by Austro-Hungarian general Lazar Mamula. The island, during World War II served as a notorious prison known for cruelty.
